Collaborative Engagement of Local and Traditional Knowledge and Science in Marine Environments: A Review Ecology and Society
Thornton, Thomas F; University of Oxford; thomas.thornton@ouce.ox.ac.uk; Scheer, Adela Maciejewski ; McGill University; admasch@gmail.com.
Local and traditional ecological knowledge (LTK) is increasingly recognized as an important component of scientific research, conservation, and resource management. Especially where there are gaps in the scientific literature, LTK can be a critical source of basic environmental data; this situation is particularly apparent in the case of marine ecosystems, about which comparatively less is known than terrestrial ones. We surveyed the global literature relating to the LTK of marine environments and analyzed what knowledge has been collected and with what aims and results. A large proportion of LTK which has been documented by researchers consists of species-specific information that is important for traditional resource use. However, knowledge relating to...

Community structure of microfitobenthos from the central coastal zone of Venezuela Boletín de Investigaciones
Pereira,Carlos; De Roa,Evelyn Zoppi; Montiel,Edie; Hernández,Vanessa; Castillo,Anyoelis.
ABSTRACT Microphytobenthos is a community that groups benthic photosynthetic microorganisms. In Venezuela and the other countries in the Caribbean Sea, this group has been scarcely studied, so its diversity is unknown. This study aims to describe the spatial and temporal variations of its composition and abundance in the central coastal zone of Venezuela. Samplings were conducted monthly from June 2014 to March 2015, in random stations at depths less than 20 m. Richness and abundance data were processed through multivariate hypothesis tests (Anosim - SIMPER - nMDS). A total of 327 species were identified, with a dominance of diatoms and dinoflagellates, without significant spatial and temporal variations. In terms of abundance, the most representative...

Composition, density and biomass of fish community from the surf zone as a function of the lunar cycle at Miramar Beach in Cabedelo, Paraíba Neotropical Ichthyology
Pessoa,Willy Vila Nova; Ramos,Jonas de Assis Almeida; Oliveira,Paulo Guilherme Vasconcelos de.
ABSTRACT The influence of the moon cycles on the ichthyofauna has been little studied in the surf zone. In this study, the number of species, density and biomass were evaluated as a function of the moon. A total of 49 species distributed in 24 families were captured in two areas of Miramar beach. The mean density was significant high in the weaning and low in the new moon, while density and biomass together showed differences for areas. The most abundant species were Anchoa tricolor and Trachinotus falcatus (new moon), and Anchovia clupeoides showed significant differences in the waning moon. The RDA indicates that turbidity influenced significantly the presence of two species group. The group I were represented by Stellifer brasiliensis, Trachinotus...

Ecophysiological differences between vesicomyid species and metabolic capabilities of their symbionts influence distribution patterns of the deep‐sea clams ArchiMer
Cruaud, Perrine; Decker, Carole; Olu, Karine; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Papot, Claire; Le Baut, Jocelyn; Vigneron, Adrien; Khripounoff, Alexis; Gayet, Nicolas; Cathalot, Cecile; Caprais, Jean-claude; Pignet, Patricia; Godfroy, Anne; Cambon Bonavita, Marie-anne.
This study provides an analysis of vesicomyid bivalve–symbiont community distribution across cold seep and hydrothermal vent areas in the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California, Mexico). Using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches including fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and electronic microscopy observations, vesicomyid clam species and their associated symbionts were characterized and results were analyzed in light of geochemical conditions and other on‐site observations. A greater diversity of vesicomyids was found at cold seep areas, where three different species were present (Phreagena soyoae [syn. kilmeri], Archivesica gigas, and Calyptogena pacifica). In contrast, A. gigas was the only species sampled across the hydrothermal...

Emergence of Global Adaptive Governance for Stewardship of Regional Marine Resources Ecology and Society
Folke, Carl; Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University; Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences; carl.folke@beijer.kva.se.
Overfishing has historically caused widespread stock collapses in the Southern Ocean. Until recently, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing threatened to result in the collapse of some of the few remaining valuable fish stocks in the region and vulnerable seabird populations. Currently, this unsustainable fishing has been reduced to less than 10% of former levels. We describe and analyze the emergence of the social-ecological governance system that made it possible to curb the fisheries crisis. For this purpose, we investigated the interplay between actors, social networks, organizations, and institutions in relation to environmental outcomes. We drew on a diversity of methods, including qualitative interviews, quantitative social network and...

Heavy minerals in the Nigeria river sediments OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F.; Akpati, B.N..
Analysis of 450 sediment samples from various rivers in Nigeria have resulted in the identification of seven major drainage systems some of which may be potential sources of heavy mineral contribution to the continental shelf. The seven major drainage systems are: (1) Niger/Benue drainage system with coarse to medium size sediments and a high of 90% opaque mineral concentration in many cases. Some gem heavy minerals like garnet and zircon are also recorded. (2) Gombi drainage system: consists of medium to coarse sand. Opaque mineral concentrations are also high. Up to 90.59% at station BO.99.3. (3) Bauchi Plateau drainage system: Sediments from this drainage system are very coarse and highly angular. This drainage system records the highest overall opaque...

La Gouvernance de la Biodiversite Marine et Cotiere dans le Golfe de Guinee. OceanDocs
Etoga, G. Y. L..
Biodiversity is a holistic concept which encompasses what the scientific literature describes as inter-specific diversity (diversity between species), intra-specific diversity (genetic diversity) and diversity of ecosystems. As a support of life, the preservation of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine habitats is of primary importance for the ecological balance of the Earth. Moreover, it is essential for human beings whose lifestyle depends on nature. The value of biodiversity lies with the opportunities provided to mankind to adapt to a changing environment. Concerning specifically the seas and oceans that constitute ¾ of the planet and 90% of the biosphere, there is a renewed ‘ecological awareness’ at the global level on the need to preserve marine...
